Velvet Orbit

Lavender and gold sculptural ring relief — dense directional texture, gloss white ground, commanding square format.

NZ$190.00

A large sculptural ring occupies the centre of a gloss white square canvas — its surface built from dense, directional relief strokes in lavender and gold that follow the curve of the form, creating a sense of continuous rotation. The two colours are interwoven throughout rather than separated into zones, so the ring reads differently from every angle and in every light condition.
This lavender and gold textured ring painting commands presence at scale. The open centre draws the eye inward while the surrounding white ground — gloss-finished and luminous — frames the form with precision. Against white or neutral walls, the colour sits with clarity; alongside natural materials, it introduces warmth and movement. A work of sustained visual energy held within strict geometric order.

The ring form was chosen for its self-containment. Unlike a linear or branching composition, a ring has no beginning and no end — the eye enters and continues, finding no interruption. The open centre is as much a part of the work as the built-up relief surrounding it; without it, the form would be a disc, and the sense of orbit would be lost.
The directional relief strokes follow the curvature of the ring throughout. Each stroke was applied in the direction of travel — tangential to the circle at the point of application — so that the texture reinforces the sense of rotation rather than contradicting it. The result is a surface that appears to be in motion even when the work is still.
Lavender and gold were chosen for their tonal proximity. Both sit in a mid-range of warmth — neither cold nor saturated — which allows them to be interwoven without one dominating the other. The gloss white ground was applied last, sealing the canvas and intensifying the colour of the ring by contrast. White at this finish level is not neutral. It is a material decision, and it changes everything around it.
