Summer Serenity

White and sky blue sculptural floral relief — close-cropped bloom, gold-textured centre, calm architectural scale.

NZ$120.00

A single white bloom fills the canvas — its petals built up in layered relief, each one distinct in form and edge quality, the centre rendered in a granular gold texture that sits at the threshold between painting and surface material. The flower is close-cropped at the upper edge of the frame, the sky blue ground visible only in the lower half and between the outermost petals.
This white and blue textured floral painting operates through scale and proximity rather than arrangement. The bloom is not placed within the composition — it is the composition, pressing against the frame on three sides. The sky blue ground grounds it without containing it. Clean, luminous, and quietly confident in rooms that favour natural light and open volume.

The decision to crop the flower was also a decision about scale. A bloom that fits within its frame is a representation of a flower; one that exceeds it becomes something else — an object with presence, a form that implies continuation beyond the edge of the canvas. The cropping was deliberate and determined early; the composition was built around it, not arrived at after.
Each petal was worked individually — its underside built up first to create genuine depth, its surface then refined to distinguish it from its neighbours. No two petals share the same edge profile. At a distance, the bloom reads as a unified white form; closer, it reveals the accumulated decision-making of its construction.
Sky blue was chosen for the ground because of its relationship with white under natural light. The two colours share luminosity — both reflect rather than absorb — which gives the canvas a brightness that is material rather than colouristic. The gold granular centre is the only warm element in the composition. It anchors everything else and gives the eye a place to rest.
