Solar Cluster
Grey and gold three-dimensional sphere relief — orbital composition, varied scale, genuine sculptural depth.
NZ$120.00
Gold relief spheres of varying diameter are distributed across a warm grey ground in a loose diagonal cluster — each one fully three-dimensional, its surface textured and light-responsive in a way that flat relief cannot achieve. Between and around them, fine gold dot elements mark the field at different scales, giving the composition depth and atmosphere beyond its central forms.
This grey and gold sculptural sphere painting occupies genuine three-dimensional space. The largest orbs cast subtle shadow on the ground beneath them; the smallest dots read as distance. The work rewards close inspection and holds its presence from across the room. Against concrete, plaster, or pale timber, it introduces material weight and warmth without colour as its primary instrument.
The spheres were built up from the ground over multiple sessions — each one formed individually, allowed to set, then textured before the gold was applied. Their scale relationships were not predetermined; each was sized in response to its neighbours as the composition developed. The largest sphere anchors the lower-left diagonal; everything else establishes its distance from that point.
Grey was chosen as the ground for its behaviour with gold under different light conditions. A warm grey — one with yellow rather than blue in it — shares the undertone of gold without competing with it. The spheres appear to belong to the surface rather than sitting on top of it, which was the material intention from the beginning.
The dot satellites were the final element resolved. Individually, each one is minor — a small raised point, nothing more. Collectively, they change the character of the entire field: what would otherwise be empty grey becomes inhabited, atmospheric, spatially complex. They are not decoration. They are the difference between a composition and a system.
