One element. One gesture. A single arc of raised gold relief sweeps diagonally across the canvas — broadening through the centre, tapering to a fine point at each end. The surrounding field is white and worked, its surface carrying the quiet evidence of process: brushed, layered, alive under light.
The arc was conceived as a single unbroken movement — the kind of line that must be committed to completely, because any hesitation reads on the surface. The gold relief was built up in layers over the form, each application adding density and texture without softening the edge quality of the sweep.
The decision to use only one element was also the most demanding aspect of the work. With a single form, there is nowhere to redirect attention. Every quality of the piece — the weight of the arc, its placement within the circle, the precision of its taper — carries full compositional responsibility.
White was chosen as the ground not for neutrality but for its responsiveness. A white surface reads differently in every light condition. The gold arc, by contrast, is consistent — warm, present, fixed. The tension between a surface that changes and a form that does not is what gives the work its sustained interest.
