No colour. No line. Only form and the light that moves across it. A horizontal ridge system rises from the lower half of the canvas — layered, folded, compressed — while the upper field remains calm and unworked. The contrast between the two is the composition: stillness above, movement below, a horizon defined entirely by material.
This white sculptural relief painting works differently from any flat artwork. Its surface reads as shadow at dawn, chalk-white at midday, warm ivory by late afternoon. Against white walls it recedes and advances simultaneously — an object that occupies space without colour as its instrument. Considered and precise, it is interior art for spaces that require nothing decorative.
The decision to work in a single colour was also a decision about attention. When colour is removed, everything else — form, shadow, depth, surface quality — becomes primary. The eye is left with no shortcuts. It must read the work through the light available to it, and that reading changes with every hour of the day.
The ridges were built up slowly, each layer allowed to set before the next was applied. The folded quality of the lower surface was not planned in detail — it emerged through the process of working the material while it remained responsive. What appears geological was made by hand, in real time, without revision.
The upper field was a conscious act of restraint. It would have been easy to continue the texture across the full surface. Leaving it smooth was the harder choice — and the right one. The division holds the composition. The horizon is the work.
