Lines of Silence

Black and grey sculptural wave relief — dense white line work, wide horizontal format, pure architectural presence.

NZ$120.00

Two wave forms in deep gloss black move horizontally across a cool grey ground — their contours organic, their interiors structured. White relief lines fill each form completely, following the curve of their boundaries with the density and precision of technical drawing. The contrast between the matte grey field and the gloss black forms is immediate; the white line relief within adds a third layer of material distinction.
This black and grey textured abstract painting is built for wide walls. The horizontal format and the lateral movement of the wave forms make it equally resolved at distance and in detail. Monochrome in palette, it integrates with virtually any interior scheme — timber, concrete, plaster, linen — without compromise. Authoritative and restrained in equal measure.

The wave forms were drawn before they were built. Their outlines were established first as boundaries — containers for the line work that would follow — and then raised from the ground in gloss black, sealing the grey field outside them from what would happen within. The decision to use gloss for the forms and matte for the ground was structural: it created a material boundary as clear as a physical edge.
The white relief lines were applied in sequence from the outer boundary of each form inward, following the curve at each pass. The spacing was kept consistent by eye rather than by measurement — close enough to read as a system, variable enough to retain the evidence of the hand. The density of the lines gives each form genuine visual weight: they do not merely fill the shape; they constitute it.
Grey was chosen for the ground because it neither advances nor recedes. It holds the black forms without competing with them and gives the white line work a middle register to read against. A neutral that is not passive — it makes the contrast between the three materials possible without imposing itself on any of them.
