A single gold ring — textured, weighted, incomplete at the left edge — occupies the upper portion of a deep gloss purple canvas. The lower two-thirds remain open: dark, reflective, uninterrupted. The asymmetry is deliberate. The ring does not centre itself; it arrives from outside the frame and holds its position without apology.
This dark purple and gold textured abstract painting is designed for spaces that can sustain visual weight. The gloss ground shifts between near-black and deep violet depending on the light source, giving the canvas a nocturnal quality that changes through the day. The gold relief catches even low ambient light and returns it to the room. A work of considered drama — restrained in means, significant in presence.
The decision to place the ring off-centre — and to allow it to be cropped by the left edge — was made early and not revisited. A centred ring would have been symmetrical and therefore resolved. This one remains in motion, as if passing through the frame rather than inhabiting it. The tension that creates is what keeps the composition active.
Deep purple was selected for its behaviour under gloss finish. Applied flat, purple reads as colour; sealed under high gloss, it becomes a surface with genuine depth — light enters it and does not return cleanly. The gold ring sits on top of this, categorically different in its reflectivity, and the contrast between a surface that absorbs and one that reflects is the material subject of the work.
The open lower field was not emptiness by default. Several earlier versions carried texture throughout. Each was resolved by removing it. What remains is the minimum: a dark ground, a single form, and the light that moves between them. Nothing else was needed.
