Golden Cartography
Emerald and gold sculptural relief — organic forms, fine contour lines, map-like surface for architectural interiors.
NZ$70.00
Large gold relief forms occupy the canvas like landmasses — irregular, weighted, connected by a network of fine raised lines that trace their boundaries and extend beyond them. The emerald ground is textured throughout, its surface active beneath the gold rather than passive behind it. The relationship between filled form and open field shifts depending on viewing distance: from across the room, the gold dominates; closer, the line work becomes the subject.
This emerald green and gold textured abstract painting rewards sustained attention. The composition has no fixed focal point — the eye moves continuously, following the contour lines from one form to the next. A work with genuine visual complexity, resolved with restraint. Suited to spaces that can hold scale and detail simultaneously.
The forms arrived before the lines. Large areas of gold relief were established first — their shapes intuitive, their edges defined by the movement of the material rather than a predetermined outline. The fine contour lines came second, tracing those edges and then departing from them, connecting forms that had no prior relationship.
Emerald was chosen for its saturation at depth. Unlike teal or sage, emerald holds its intensity under artificial light as well as natural — it does not grey out or flatten. Against the gold relief, it creates a contrast that is warm rather than stark, the two colours close enough in value to coexist without tension.
The cartographic quality of the surface was recognised rather than planned. Once the line network was established, the resemblance to topographic mapping became clear — elevation indicated by density, territory defined by contour. The work does not illustrate a landscape. It behaves like one: complex, self-consistent, navigable only by those willing to look slowly.
