Concentric rings of gold relief orbit a deep, luminous centre — the composition pulls inward while the surrounding field pushes back with dispersed gold leaf and worked texture. The ground is a rich petrol blue, layered and directional, its surface carrying visible movement beneath the gold.
This deep blue and gold textured abstract painting operates at the scale of architecture. The square format gives the vortex form equal reach in all directions, contained but not diminished. Against dark walls it commands; against pale surfaces it anchors. The gold catches light from across the room, drawing the eye to the centre and holding it there. A work of sustained visual presence.
The concentric structure began as a question about depth — how far into a flat surface a painted form can appear to recede. The rings were laid in sequence, each orbit slightly wider than the last, the gold applied while the ground was still responsive. The centre was built last, its gloss quality a result of layering rather than a finish applied over the top.
Petrol blue was chosen for its depth at scale. At smaller sizes, the colour reads as teal; at the dimensions of this canvas, it absorbs light and darkens. The gold leaf fragments distributed across the outer field were not placed individually — they were released and allowed to settle, their positions fixed only when the surface was sealed.
The result is a composition with two systems in tension: the ordered, centripetal pull of the concentric rings, and the scattered, atmospheric quality of the surrounding field. Control at the centre; release at the edges. The work holds both without resolving either.
