Ginkgo leaves

Gold ginkgo relief on pearl white — framed botanical diptych with crystal accents, refined and precise.

NZ$70.00

Two framed vertical panels share a botanical composition of gold relief ginkgo leaves — each stem carrying leaves rendered in two distinct registers: solid gold relief with full textural presence, and fine gold contour lines that allow the pearl white ground to read through. A single mint green crystal-textured leaf appears on each panel, its granular surface distinct from the gold relief surrounding it.
This gold ginkgo leaf botanical diptych is among the most precisely detailed works in the collection. The gold frame — integral rather than added — extends the warm palette of the composition to the canvas edge, completing the work rather than containing it. Against pale walls, the botanical forms read with the clarity of specimen illustration. A refined pair for spaces that value detail and restraint equally.

Ginkgo was chosen for its leaf geometry — the distinctive fan shape with its central notch is one of the most architecturally resolved forms in the botanical world. Unlike most leaves, the ginkgo has no hierarchical branching in its venation: the lines radiate from the base with equal weight, which translates directly into relief without simplification.
Each panel carries the same stem structure with variation in the distribution of leaves. The two registers of gold — solid relief and fine contour line — were a response to the challenge of depicting leaves at different stages: the solid forms read as present, fully material; the outline forms read as transitional, between presence and absence. The mint crystal leaf introduces a third state: colour without mass.
The gold frame was considered from the beginning, not added at the end. A white or natural frame would have separated the botanical composition from its edge; the gold frame continues the warm register of the relief into the border, so the work reads as a unified object rather than a painting within a frame. The distinction is architectural and it matters.
